Mutual Funds - Reading a Quote
Many mutual fund price quotations are published each business day in most primary newspapers. Four and sometimes five columns are illustrated.
The first column is usually an abbreviation of the Fund's Name.
Other columns listed may include any or all of the following:
- Net Asset Value (NAV)* is the price per share as of the close of the previous business day (may also be called the sell or bid price). It will show the change in NAV from the prior day.
- May list the mutual fund's Year-To-Date return, with the percentage of the return illustrating how the fund has performed (assumes earnings reinvested) thus far in the current year. This may list other annualized percentages for 3, 5, 10 or more years.
- May list the Offer Price. No-load funds are indicated by a NL. Mutual funds that charge a load will show an offer price, some may show a discount to the NAV, and funds offered through a systematic plan may show a NAV equal to the offer price.
- Net Change indicates how much the fund's NAV (price) has changed since the previous day's trading.
This chart shows a sample of the common terms and symbols that you may find in a mutual fund quotation.

Each mutual fund calculates its NAV each business day. It divides the market value of its total assets, less liabilities, by the number of shares outstanding.
