Personal Umbrella Liability
Personal Umbrella Liability is coverage designed to provide coverage over and above the liability coverage already provided under your automobile, homeowners, boatowners and other personal insurance policies.
If you are sued, your standard homeowners or auto policy will usually provide liability coverage which will pay for attorney fees and judgements made against you. However, the personal umbrella often provides you with broader liability coverage than your primary auto, homeowner, boat or personal insurance policy. Therefore, you may want to protect yourself with the extra layer of liability protection that a personal umbrella liability policy provides.
Underlying liability limits of $300,000 and sometimes $500,000 or $1,000,000 may be a minimum coverage requirement, dependent upon the carrier that offers the personal umbrella liability coverage.
As Personal Umbrella Liability is an excess policy, in the event of an eligible loss, it pays over and above what your primary carrier pays.
You do not have to be wealthy to be sued! Suits occur every day and the courts are awarding large settlements, often reaching a million dollars and more where the case involves injuries and/or property damage. Don't think that it could never happen to you.
You can be held personally accountable and legally liable for losses suffered by an individual(s) or entity(ies) which may include:
· An auto accident involving you or a member of your family.
· An injury or accident on property owned by you.
· An accident as the outcome of a recreational activity. (i.e. golfing, boating, hunting accident, etc.)
· A suit that involves invasion of rights or privacy, libel, slander, false arrest, mental anguish, malicious prosecution...to name several possibilities.
The personal umbrella liability coverage extends to Canada and outside of the U.S.*, covers all approved defense costs, and the coverage is affordable. Cost is based upon where you live, the level of coverage selected, and the number of automobiles, homes, boats, etc. that you own.
